Phoniex Jewelers: Diamond FAQs

Phoniex Jewelers:  Diamond Price Per Carat

How to calculate diamond price per carat | Ritani.com
Diamond prices are complicated. Their value is determined by dozens of factors: diamond prices fluctuate from day to day because of market trends, time of year and more, similar to gold or antiques. Columbus Jewelers Diamond carat weight is the jewelry industry’s measurement of how much a diamond weighs; 1 carat equals 200 milligrams. Yet depending on diamond shape, weight distribution and cut quality, two diamonds with the same carat weight can have many different prices.

Phoenix Jewelers: What Is Price Per Carat?

The diamond industry uses a matrix called the Rapaport Price List to estimate a loose diamond’s value.  The Rapaport List assigns diamond values based on carat weight, color, and clarity grades, as well as fluctuations in the market. The Rapaport List’s diamond values are described in terms of “price per carat.”
“Price per carat” is an individual diamond’s cost divided by its weight.
Price Per Carat = Diamond Price / Carat Weight
Diamond retailers use Rapaport’s “price per carat” values to estimate competitive market prices for their inventory, although final retail prices may be below or above the Rapaport price estimates.
Diamond prices per carat increase as you jump up to higher weight categories. The larger the diamond, Chicago Jewelers.  the rarer it is. As carat weight increases, you pay more in total and on a price-per-carat basis. Basically, diamond prices increase exponentially as carat weight increases.

Why Is Diamond Price Per Carat Important?

Let’s begin this discussion with a familiar concept: Groceries. Let’s say, for example, bananas are .99c per pound at your grocery store. If you buy a pound of bananas, it costs .99c. If you buy 2 pounds, it costs $1.98. If you buy 3 pounds, it costs $2.97. And so on. Price and quantity have a 1:1 relationship.
Diamonds don’t work that way. With diamonds, San Diego jewelers size itself is considered an intrinsic element of value, so the price does not have a 1:1 ratio to size (or volume) like bananas. Instead, size acts as a multiplier on the price of a diamond.
The below chart illustrates this concept. As you can see, the price per carat increases with weight, causing the total cost of a diamond to increase exponentially the larger it is.

Why Does Price Per Carat Change?

Size and rarity. In general, the larger the diamond, the rarer it is. There are a lot more pieces of diamond rough that can be cut into marketable 1-carat diamonds than there are pieces you can cut into marketable 2-carat diamonds. San Francisco jewelers So, larger diamonds have a higher price per carat weight to reflect that they’re rarer.
Quality factors. Every diamond is unique, and as you may know from our Education section, qualities including the 4 C’s effect a diamond’s price. So, 2 diamonds of the same carat weight are often priced differently (have a different price per carat) because one is higher quality than the other (more sparkly, fewer inclusions, more symmetrical, etc).

Buying Tip: Shave Off A Few Milligrams

For the best value, consider diamonds slightly below the major carat weight categories. Diamond prices spike at “carat weight cutoffs” (1.00, 1.25, 1.50, etc), so you can save money going slightly under (0.95 vs 1.00). The difference in visual size will be negligible, but the savings can be significant.  san Antonio jewelers To prove this hypothesis, we compared two diamonds with the same grades (Cut: Ideal, Color: G, Clarity: VVS1) at 1.00 Carat and.90 Carat to see their price differences:
DiamondPrice
1.00 Carat Round Diamond$6,718
0.90 Carat Round Diamond$5,133

Buying Tip: The Halo Loophole

A known trick in the diamond business is adding a halo around a smaller center stone to save money. By adding a halo, you can achieve a greater total carat weight, the appearance of a larger stone, and you will spend less money on the diamonds. phoenix Jewelers A smaller center stone, for example, a 0.75ct round brilliant diamond, has a lower price per carat, which also means you may be able to get a higher quality stone with significant cost savings. To prove this theory, we compared two diamonds with the same grades (Cut: Very Good, Color: K, Clarity: VS2, Polish: EX, Symmetry: VG, Fluorescence: N) at 1.00 Carat and .75 Carat. We put each diamond in similar settings so that each ring ends up with the same total carat weight.
Ring A
Diamond A  |  Setting A
Ring B
Diamond B   |   Setting B
Diamond Weight1.0 carats0.75 carats
Diamond Price$3764.00$1465.00
Setting Carat Weight0.20 carats0.45 carats
Setting Price$1100.00$1600.00
Total Carat Weight1.20 carats1.20 carats
Total Price$4864.00$3065.00
Total Price Per Carat$4053.30$2554.20

As you can see, the price per carat drops almost in half with the 0.75 carats round diamond engagement ring, New York Jewelers even though each ring has the same total carat weight. The difference in center stone size is small, but the cost savings are large.

Phoenix Jewelers: How to Buy a Pear Shaped Diamond

Phoenix Jewelers:  Pear Shaped Diamond

Phoniex Jewelers

Pear-shaped diamonds have always been a unique and brilliant way to symbolize true love.
Hollywood actor Richard Burton once paid $1.1 million for a 69-carat, pear-shaped diamond cut by famous jeweler Harry Winston and presented it to his wife Elizabeth Taylor, the academy award-winning actress and fashion icon.
The incredible stone graced her neck in several public appearances and eventually became the centerpiece of a gorgeous Cartier ring. Jewelry Store In Chicago While their famously stormy relationship faded from the public eye many years ago, the Taylor Burton diamond made a permanent impression.

Related: Elizabeth Taylor’s Engagement Rings
While choosing an enormous, million-dollar diamond for Elizabeth Taylor may be a no-brainer, choosing a pear-shaped or teardrop diamond engagement ring for your fiancée takes confidence.
Why? Because the most common choice for diamond engagement rings is round shaped diamonds. Jewelry Store in San Diego In fact, only 3-5% of Ritani diamond engagement rings feature pear-shaped center stones, making them a truly a unique and distinctive choice.
To take the guesswork out of choosing one of these unique stones, we’ve answered some of the most common questions diamond buyers ask about pear-shaped diamonds.

Phoenix Jewelers: What is a pear-shaped diamond?

A pear-shaped diamond is also called a teardrop diamond because of its rounded shape which narrows into a point at the top or bottom. It is a modified brilliant round cut (which contains all 58 facets of a typical brilliant round diamond) on one end and the pointed tip (reminiscent of a marquise shape) on the other end.

Anatomy of a Pear Shaped Diamond

Pear-shaped diamonds have five parts or regions: The head, the shoulders, the belly, the wings, and the point. The head is round-shaped, like a brilliant round cut diamond. Jewelry Store in san Antonio The shape begins to narrow below the shoulders toward the belly, before coming closer together at the wings and finally meeting in the dramatic point.

Phoenix Jewelers: How do I choose a pear-shaped diamond?

There are several factors that affect the appearance and beauty of a pear-shaped diamond. jewelry Store in Phoneix These include proportion, symmetry, and shadows caused by the cut of the diamond.

The “Bow Tie Effect”

Bow ties belong on grooms and waiters, but not on your pear-shaped diamond.
The “bow-tie effect” on a pear-shaped diamond is the light gray to a black pattern resembling a bow tie that typically runs across the width of the stone from the center of the table. A cut that minimizes the effect to the point that it’s hardly visible is a key to a beautiful pear-shaped diamond.

Proportion: Length to Width Ratio and Symmetry

Proportion can be one of the most important things to consider when buying a pear-shaped diamond. Jewelry Store in New York It is also the most subjective aspect and is really up to your individual taste. In general, most people prefer a length to width ratio between 1.50 and 1.75. However, you need to decide what type of shape you prefer.
Do you like a stone with a flatter top or more rounded middle? Look at a pear-shaped diamond face up and check for gently rounded shoulders and wings. Wings that are too flat may make the diamond appear too narrow, while wings that are too rounded may make it look short and bulbous.
A beautiful pear-shaped diamond must also have identical sides. To easily check the symmetry at a jeweler or online (using digital tools), draw a real or imagined line down the center, from the head to the point. The shoulder, belly, and wing portions should be identical, and 29 facets should be visible on both sides.
While the length-width ratio can give you a general idea of the shape, nothing beats seeing the diamond in person in order to determine the actual silhouette and other small details like eye cleanliness and bowtie effects. You can do so with no obligation to buy, with Phoneix Free In-Store Preview program.

Phoenix Jewelers: Are pear-shaped diamonds cheaper than other diamonds?

One of the most appealing aspects of pear-shaped diamonds is that they can be significantly less expensive than brilliant round shaped diamonds with the same cut, color, clarity, and carat weight attributes. Jewelry Store in Las vegas This is because pear-shaped diamonds usually have a very minimal amount of waste when being cut from a raw stone.
Here’s a comparison of a few stones inPhoniex’s current diamond inventory:
ShapeCarat SizeCut GradeColorClarityPolishSymmetryPrice
Round1.00VGFVS1EXVG$5,654
Pear1.00VGFVS1EXVG$4,871
Round2.00VGEVS1EXVG$25,475
Pear2.00VGEVS1EXVG$23,238
As carat size increases, the price gap between round and pear-shaped diamonds widens. Reaching into the 3-carat range and higher ranges, pear-shaped diamonds can add up to enormous savings.

Phoenix Jewelers: How big is a 1-carat pear-shaped diamond?

Pear-shaped diamonds are longer than round diamonds of equal carat weights. A 1 carat pear-shaped diamond with a good length to width ratio measures about 8.57mm in length, whereas a 1 carat round shaped diamond measures only around 6.3mm. Jewelry Store in Austin This can make the diamond appear larger.
From the head to the shoulder, pear-shaped diamonds are as round as round shaped diamonds, but they become narrower at the belly, or roughly halfway down the surface before reaching the point.

Phoenix Jewelers: Are pear-shaped diamonds popular?

At Phoniex pear-shaped diamonds account for 3-5% of weekly diamond sales. But the who’s who list of pear-shaped diamond engagement ring wearers is growing and includes Ariana Grande, Paris Hilton, Kaley Cuoco, Cardi B, Sophie Turner, Victoria Beckham, and Avril Lavigne.

Phoenix Jewelers: How should you wear pear-shaped diamonds?

When worn as the center stone in an engagement ring, the round side or head of a pear-shaped diamond typically faces the knuckle, while the point faces the fingernail. This makes the dramatic teardrop effect when the finger is raised. But the right look is different for different people. You may prefer to wear them the opposite way or even have your pear-shaped diamond set horizontally in a dramatic east-to-west orientation.
When worn vertically, a pear-shaped diamond engagement ring can make the wearer’s finger appear longer.
Pear-shaped diamonds are sometimes found as two side diamonds sitting on both sides of round diamonds in engagement rings, and as the main stones in necklaces and drop earrings.
As you can imagine, they can be worn in a number of different ways. Here are some of our favorite pieces of jewelry featuring pear-shaped diamonds:

phoenix Jewelers: Men’s engagement rings: trend or tradition?

 Phoenix Jewelers: trend or tradition?

phoenix Jewelers
Traditionally, women have worn engagement rings as a symbol of their partner’s commitment to providing for them in marriage. Jewelry Store in Austin As gender roles have changed over time, however, so has some of the meaning behind a diamond ring. For many couples today, it isn’t a guarantee of financial stability, but an emotional bond. Indeed, most women these days work and can support themselves – often splitting the cost of an engagement ring.
It follows, then, that more men will wear a band once they are engaged. But do men wear engagement rings? In Brazil and Sweden, it is a longstanding tradition for men to wear engagement rings. Jewelry Store in Las Vegas In Chile, both men and women receive an engagement ring and wear it on their right hand but move it to their left once they get married. While men’s engagement rings are a new trend in the US, it’s one that’s quickly gaining traction. This may be due to the fact that many couples are increasingly concerned with equality. It makes sense for both people in a relationship to want to show (and celebrate!) their love and commitment. Getting engaged is an exciting time! Additionally, dozens of male celebrities are now wearing engagement rings, making it more popular.
Approximately 1 in 20 women propose to their male partners, and many of them are likely to do so by presenting a men’s engagement ring. Jewelry Store in Columbus 5% of men wears engagement rings, including those in same-sex relationships, while 17% are intrigued by the idea of wearing a ring before the big day. Searches online have even risen up to 66% year on year for men’s engagement rings.
If you are looking for men’s engagement rings, you will need to consider which metal, style, and finish are best. Here are some of the most popular Ritani men’s wedding bands that can also be worn as an engagement ring.

 Phoenix Jewelers: Width

If you are shopping for a men’s engagement ring for your partner or yourself, start by deciding your desired bandwidth. Men’s bands come in varying widths, from slim to wide. If you’re unsure what width to get, try on some rings at a local jeweler to figure out what width is most appealing and comfortable.  jewelry Store in Phoneix  If the proposal is a surprise, take a look at your significant other’s jewelry and check out the width of any rings they already own. If you’re still unsure which width to get, our 6mm band is a fan favorite.

phoenix Jewelers

Men’s bands aren’t necessarily made for stacking the way women’s bands are. Keep in mind that if you’d like to stack your engagement ring and wedding band on one finger, you should opt for a slimmer band for either your wedding band and/or your engagement ring. Jewelry Store in san Antonio If both bands don’t fit on one finger, some men will put their engagement ring on their right hand and their wedding band on their left. Some men even choose to double their engagement ring as a wedding band instead of buying an additional ring.

 Las vegas jewelers: Metals

The metal you choose for a men’s engagement ring will influence its longevity. For a durable ring, choose a block of platinum, cobalt, or palladium. Jewelry Store in San Francisco These metals also make great options for those with sensitive skin. Yellow gold is also a great hypoallergenic option. If you’re buying an engagement ring for your partner and you’re not sure what metal they would like, take a look at any existing jewelry they already own.

 New York Jewelers: Styles

It’s important to choose an engagement ring style that matches your partner’s personality and tastes.
